Excerpt from the column by Joe Pavia, Ottawa Sun, 6 February 2008:
Loyal to the end, Rideau iceman will be missed
The Rideau Curling Club has lost much of its heart and soul.
Longtime icemaker and club character Gerry Keeler died Saturday after a battle with cancer.
The club's only icemaker for the past 35 years, Keeler loved when his two Yorkshire terriers scampered around his ice, their little legs scrambling to maintain balance. His face beamed when the CBC featured the critters in their fifth-end break segment during the 2003 Canadian junior final.
Easter Saturday belonged to Keeler. His laid-back Icemen's Bonspiel featured athleticism of all sorts -- hits, sweeping, even ballet. Through it all, Keeler's impish grin mirrored the sparkle in his eyes.
Keeler engendered a loyalty not just to himself but his fellow icemakers. He hosted Friday ice technician "seminars" in his far from trendy, sometimes deafening, but oh so Keeler bunker in the Rideau's basement. His professional buddies were quick to help when the cancer took its toll.
Keeler was also fiercely loyal to his club. When the Rideau suffered a financial setback two decades ago, he took a voluntary pay cut. His unpaid hours, extra work and unstinting loyalty were not the stuff of heroes, but the stuff of a man who neither bragged nor sought the limelight. So it came as no surprise when Keeler was made an honorary life member of the Rideau last year.
JSI CANADA CUP EAST
On behalf of the John Shea Insurance Canada Cup Qualifier organizing committee, I want to thank everyone who supported the event.
It takes a large number of volunteers to prepare for, and then put on this event. Thank you very much to our drivers, timers, door monitors, ticket sellers, hotel coordinators, and everyone else who gave their time and energy to make this event successful. Even with the weather situation on Sunday, our volunteers braved the storm! You are all wonderful and amazing people! Many of you have come out to help the Ottawa and the Rideau year after year, event after event, whenever we need you. Thank you so much!!
A huge thank you to our sponsors, we wouldn’t have an event without you. Your support is greatly appreciated. I’m sure everyone will do their best to show our sponsors how much we appreciate them by using their services or products whenever possible.
Thanks to all of you who bought tickets to the event and came out to fill the stands and support the event.
A special thank you to the ice makers and their crews - both Gerry Keeler and Dwayne Lowe’s Hogline Ice. As you know, Gerry was hospitalized prior to the event. The ice makers did a great job coming to help us out when we needed them the most. Thank you so much!! You did a great job, above and beyond! We all really appreciate what you did for us, not just for this event.
Thank you to Andre Proulx and Geoff Colley for coordinating the drivers; Judy Meloche, Geoff Shepard and Bob Burwash for coordinating the volunteers; Gord Stockdale, Frances Isabelle and Lee Mantha for officiating; Gerry Peckham for his wisdom and support; and the Club managers Dalal Abou-Eid and Audrey Frey and the Clubs’ staff.
To both Bob Park and Mike Izzard who spent an aweful lot of time in a tiny room together for hours on end, pecking away at keyboards so the internet could be updated – a great big thank-you.
The cooking and serving staff at both clubs deserve a pat on the back for going above and beyond!
Naturally, we want to thank all of the curlers for coming out and putting on such a great show. I know there are a number of them who will be enjoying the Nation’s Capital for longer than they had planned. I want to pass on to all of you that many of the curlers told me they really enjoyed the event and said that it was very well run and they would definitely be back. That’s a direct reflection of the great job our volunteers do. Way to Go! Give yourselves three claps (a reference to the Karcher dinner where we were to keep our applause to a limited number of claps).
Wishing a great holiday season to one and all,
Joanne Pomalis
For Dawn Kelly, Danny Lamoureux, Doug Johnston, Gord Kritch, and Joe Pavia.
Ottawa-Rideau Challenge
The annual Ottawa-Rideau Challenge was hosted by the Ottawa Curling Club on December 28th. Unfortunately the OCC teams came up a little short and once again the Rideau Club came out victorious. However, the event was enjoyed by all and displayed the great camaraderie and friendly rivalry between members of the two clubs. Thanks to all who organized the event, as well as those who participated.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
The beautiful weather we have enjoyed for the past few weeks has been great for golfing but not at all good for making curling ice.
The OCC ice plant has been running constantly since September 2 nd and our ice technician, Dwayne Lowe, has been working night and day for the past few weeks but, because of the weather, it has been impossible to build the ice surface up to the required level.
Therefore, there will be no ice available this week and at this time we cannot predict when it will be ready for practice or play.
When we have further information, OCC members will informed by way of this web site, by email or by telephone.
The novice clinic will proceed on Sunday September 30th, See below
Thank you for your patience.
