The 8 th Annual Bonnie Matheson Memorial Golf Tournament this year is a fundraiser in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. For those of you who did not know her, Bonnie was an avid golfer and long-time member of the O.C.C. A portion of your entry fee will be donated to the Foundation in her memory.
The event will take place at Hylands Golf Club on Friday, June 8, 2007. Cost is $100/person which includes lunch at Hylands (12:00 noon), 18 holes of golf with electric cart, and steak (or chicken) dinner back at the club. This event is open to non-members of the Ottawa Curling Club, so spread the word among family, friends and work colleagues. This is a best-ball tournament, so golfers of all skill levels are welcome!
As the leading national volunteer-based organization dedicated to creating a future without breast cancer, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation works collaboratively to fund, support and advocate for relevant and innovative research, meaningful education and awareness programs, early diagnosis and effective treatment, and a positive quality of life for those living with breast cancer. For more information about the Foundation, please visit www.cbcf.org .

“ Get the Cards, Fish” !
Many a time I walked into the Ottawa Curling Club to hear the above challenge issued by a man sitting near the bar; a slim man with a smoky voice and a twinkle in his eye. Almost always this resulted in my being thrashed at gin rummy by Bobby Gamble.
Bob passed away on New Year’s Eve and perhaps the last great character in a long tradition of O.C.C. characters has gone. Those of us who have been members for a long time have vivid recollections of some of these characters and, though time smoothes out the rough edges of our memories of these men, they weren’t, in fact, always nice guys.
But we won’t need the passage of time to think kindly of Bob for he was a gentle man. I never saw him in a bad mood and, though his health in recent years gave him reasons to complain, he never did.. If you said “How are you Bob” the answer was always “Great”
The only time he ever admonished me was when I howled at yet another run of bad cards and he would sharply say “Stop Whining”. He had every right to say it for he never did.
“Everything in moderation” was definitely not Bob’s motto. He indulged his vices immoderately but, though his health and economic circumstances in recent years were far from ideal, he soldiered on and our Club is the poorer for his passing.
I’d like to think that quite recently, 3 deceased characters from our Club, Doug Norton, Larry Riopelle, and Pat Craig, were approached by a slim fellow with a smoky voice and a twinkle in his eye. He would undoubtedly greet them with “Get the Cards, Fish”
Rest easy my friend.
