Volunteers needed to help host Ambassadors

Greeters for Ambassadors

The OCC is trying to garner some publicity and bring in new members by staging a ceremonial throwing of curling rocks by the ambassadors of the 13 countries participating in curling at the Torino Olympics Games. The ceremony will take place on the opening day of the curling competition.

POSTION FUNCTION: To greet an Ambassador and stay with him/her while the Ambassador throws out the first rock.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  1. Meet Ambassador at the door of the OCC.
  2. To help him/here throw their rock.
  3. To escort Ambassador during short reception.

SKILL SET REQUIRED:

  1. The ability to speak one of the following languages: German, Russian, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, French and English.
  2. Ability to throw a rock.

TIME LINES:

The event will be held on Monday February 13 at 10 a.m. and last 60 minutes

OCC TEAMS MAKE PROVINCIALS

Two Ottawa Curling Club teams won their respective regions on the weekend and now head to the Provincials (the Kia Cup – men & the Scott Tournament of Hearts – women).

Team Jenn Hanna took the A-side with Joelle Sabourin, Dawn Askin and Stephanie Hanna. Team Bryan Cochrane also took his A-side with Chris Fulton, Jeff Henderson and John Steski.

Another OCC team (but playing out of the Huntley CC) won the B-side of their region. Team Willie Jeffries along with Spencer Cooper, Mark Rodgers and Nic Aubin will also compete in the Kia Cup.

The OCC team of Jamie Sutherland, Fred Barbieri, Burl Walker and Jos Dyck (with Claude Plante as fifth and playing the winning game)won their Zone 1A Holiday Inn Challenge on the weekend. The OCC team of Margaret Phillips, Ruth Buckland, Brenda Bethune and NicoleVaillancourt won Zone 1B in the Best Western Challenge. With no regional play, the teams now goes to the provincials for that event.

The Kia Cup takes place in Guelph from February 6-12 while the women’s runs from January 30 to February 4 in Fort Frances. The Holiday Inn Challenge provincial takes place in Brighton while the Best Western Challenge provincial takes place in Picton, January 20 to 22.

OCC Junior Members Zone In

With Zone action completed on the weekend, some OCC junior players now move onto regional play.

The Monday ladder of team of Jaclyn Rivington , Jackie Peters, Julie Frame and Chelsea Rivington captured the Zone 3A side title.

In the same zone, Monday Ladder and Cash League participant, Chris Gardner, took A-side kudos

Another ladder third, Rachel Homan, skipped her team to Zone 3B top spot. Team Homan is coached by a Ladder and Cash League skip, Earle Morris.

Monday night Ladder skip and Wednesday night cash league player, Chris Gardner advances to the Junior Provincials after his regional A-side win on Sunday. Roger Johnstone frim Cash League coaches Team Gardner.


Gananoque But Not Forgotten

The OCC’s Doug Johnston, Brad Shinn, Mike Johansen and Dave McMahon battled to the finals at the Gananoque Cashspiel yesterday. Their runner-up finish earned them $1,400.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
TEACH ROOKIE CURLERS FOR JUST ONE HOUR ONE TIME

Your Club needs you as we try to entice new curlers to try our sport during the Tim Hortons Olympic Curling Trials.
A promotion will allow people to sign up to try curling here during the Trials (December 3 to 11) at no charge.

WHAT’S YOUR ROLE?

You will be our ambassador for curling.
DUTIES:

  1. Meet and greet the new curlers.
  2. Explain a little history of the club.
  3. Outfit the new curlers (tape and/or shoes, broom etc)
  4. Talk some on-ice safety.
  5. Take them on the ice for one hour with rudimentary instruction.

WHEN IS THIS?
The free curling offer is available at the following times.

Weekdays December 5 to 9: 12 to 2 pm
Weekends: Saturday December 3 and 10 1 to 4 pm
Sunday December 4 & 11, 6 to 8 pm

YOUR TIME COMMITMENT
Interested people have to book the time previously so just ding up for the time slot of your choice and Geoff Sheppard our volunteer coordinator will call you should you be needed.

MEMORIAM:

FORMER OTTAWA CURLING CLUB PRESIDENT

Pat Craig passed away on the weekend. “Patty, The Ayatollah” was the Club’s President from 1984 to 1986 and a long time member of the Board of Directors.

An able curler and a man who liked to have a good time, Pat was a stalwart in the Saturday morning league as an organizer and combatant. Despite his inability to play, “The Ayatollah” would visit that league often and attended all the social functions seemingly just to keep everybody honest.

The family has requested a reception to be held at the Ottawa Curling Club on Wednesday November 23 rd at 4:30 pm.

CRAIG, Patrick Stephen William Past President Ottawa Curling Club Peacefully in hospital Saturday November 19, 2005. Beloved husband of Alexia "Alice" Bohonis. Loving father of David (Nancy Bell) and Donna (Dean) Justus. Cherished grandfather to Charlie. Son of the late Elsie and Henry Craig. Dear brother of Marlyn, Norma (Peter Languay), Joan (Pierre Lecomte), John (Diane Murphy). Pat will be forever remembered by his nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Mass in Memory of Mr. Craig will be held Wednesday November 23 in St. Augustine's Church at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Cancer Society appreciated.

SHORT CAREERS AT THE OCC

 

Here’s your chance to work for NO pay, NO financial benefits and NO paid holiday! Sounds enticing don’t it.

The Ottawa has two SHORT TERM volunteer opportunities available.

1. Desk top/graphic designer: POSITION FILLED   

Function: To design and typeset 3 editions of the AT THE OTTAWA members’ newsletter.

Duties: Design a template for the newsletter that is black and white focused.

Typeset, NOT CREATE copy for AT THE OTTAWA.

Experience: No professional experience or age required except an understanding of good design.

Duration: 3 issues per year with the first issue due in early November.

2. Digital photographer: FILLED

Function: To take some stock photos of club activities for various promotional vehicles.

Duties: Using your own camera, snapping photos of pre-determined subjects.

Organizing photos in files for ease of use.

Obtaining permission of subjects for use of their images.

Experience: No professional experience or age required except an understanding of good composition.

Duration: 14 days or enough time to photograph many club activities.

1st Annual Swing & Sweep

Last time with golf clubs? First time with a broom?

The OCC will be hosting the first annual Swing & Sweep on October 15th. The day will kick off with 9 holes of golf at The Meadows Golf Club. This will be a shotgun start commencing at 9am. The day will continue with two-4 end games of curling commencing at 1pm. The day will wrap up with a sumptuous dinner of PT's famous barbequed steak followed by prize presentations. Cost of the day is $50.00 and includes golf, golf cart, curling, dinner and, if lucky enough, prizes!

All are welcome to participate, but sign up early as participation is limited to 80 people. Please contact the Club Manager at 234-4119 to register, or stop in at the Club, sign up, renew old friendships and make new ones over a beverage.

Instruction Clinic

A beginner's clinic will be held on Tuesday, October 4th from 6:30 to 10:30 pm. The cost of the clinic is $5.00 for OCC members and $10.00 for non-members. Please contact the Club at 234-4119 prior to noon on October 3rd to register.


Little Rocks

Kids can experience curling for free. A Little Rocks open house will take place on Sunday, October 2nd from noon to 2 pm. Kids and youth between 7 to 15 years of age need only bring clean sneakers and loose clothing. The challenge and life long joys of curling are available at the Ottawa Curling Club – it’s where you belong. Contact the Club Manager at 234-4119 for additional information.
