2004-2005 Season Club News

Thank You from Team Hanna

Thank you so very much for all of the support you have given to our team. This has been such a wonderful experience for every one of us and it is made that much more special with the kindness that has come from people like you!

Thanks again, Team Ontario 2005

Thank You from Team Matheson

On behalf of Eldon, Ron, Georges and Rod,

We would like to thank the OCC and it's members for your most generous help in meeting the expenses we incurred in competing in Brandon.

We had a marvelous time, played quite well, and come up a dollar short in the semi final.

It was a great experience.

Thank you again for helping us.

Hanna rink wins hearts at Hearts

By BARRE CAMPBELL -- Ottawa Sun

They say in sports that winning is everything. But Jenn Hanna was living proof of the opposite with her performance -- both on and off the ice -- during the Scott Tournament of Hearts. She had victory in the national women's curling championship within her grasp during Sunday's final in St. John's, but lost it in the worst way imaginable.

CONGRATULATIONS

Ottawa's own Team Hanna won the Ontario Scott Tournament of Hearts Provincial Championships on Sunday at the Rideau Curling Club. Jenn with her team-mates Pascale Letendre, Dawn Askin, Stephanie Hanna and Joelle Sabourin are now heading off to the Scott Tournament of Hearts in St. John's Newfoundland February 19-27. Making the victory extra special was the fashion in which they accomplished it. After a slower than expected start (1-4) the Team rattled off eight straight victories all of which were must win situations including the final four games in the round robin, a tie-breaker and the page playoffs.

2005 Scott Tournament of Hearts

Let’s rally some support and encouragement for Team Ontario, our own Jenn Hanna team, at the Nationals. Send your messages to Jenn, Pascale, Dawn, Steph , Joelle (and even Bob) at Team Ontario

Rock 'em on The Rock!!!!!

Good Luck - Jenn, Pascale, Dawn, Steph and Joelle

The Rocks

Congratulations to Jean-Michel Menard and his team of Jim Stewart, Jean Sebastien Roy and André Proulx, this year's club champions!

Shorty Jenkins has worked on our rocks over the summer and matched them. They will curl a lot to begin with, and this will level out after about a month of use, so please be patient! The best way to deal with curling rocks is to ensure you have good handle on your rocks (draws rotate at least 2 times between hog lines).

SUNDAY OPEN LEAGUE

Have you wanted to learn how to curl but were afraid to try? Or maybe you are new in town and want to meet other curlers? Then this league is perfect for you.

There will be instruction for the first 4 nights for new curlers or for those of you who simply want to brush up on your skills. Instruction for first time curlers will start an hour early (5:30 PM) the first night only. Instruction will start at regular league time for the following 3 weeks. Please be sure to wear comfortable clothing and bring clean running shoes. There are brooms available at the club.

This is a draw from the board league so the teams are drawn each Sunday. It is open to all skill levels and is an excellent way to spruce up your skills, curl with different people and just have fun. Sunday League is free to OCC members who are curling in other leagues.

The Sunday Open League starts October 17th at 6:30 PM. Please be ready to curl at least 15 minutes early so that we can draw the teams and be ready to play at 6:30 sharp!

To register for this league, or for additional information please contact Wendy Rathwell or manager@ottawacurlingclub.com

SUNDAY Curling Clinic

Time: Sunday mornings 8am-10am

This program of instruction is for adults who are new to curling or wish to improve their present level of curling skills. The format is to meet at 8 am for warm-up exercise and then take to the ice for drills which will improve curling delivery technique, sweeping skills and an understanding of the strategy of the game.

The program will be limited to six participants at any one time and the fee charged would be the basic club fee plus the contribution to the capital expenditure. This fee would also allow participants to participate in the Sunday League.

The goal of this program is to help the registrants develop skills at their own pace and then help them integrate into the various club leagues.

Please contact James Mullin at 789-8282 if you are interested in registering for this clinic.

Canada Cup East

This is a special thank you to all the Ottawa Curling Club members who helped out at the recent Canada Cup East.

It's a special thank-you because with the event so close to Christmas, many of you gave up valuable time to be with your curling family here at the OCC.

Without all of our dedicated members and friends, we could never hope to operate a successful event with a s much good will and friendship as you all exhibited. It really is a Christmas gift of membership! Thank

Ottawa-Rideau Challenge

The annual Ottawa-Rideau Challenge was hosted by the Rideau Curling Club on 29 December. Unfortunately the OCC teams came up a little short and once again the Rideau Club came out victorious. However, the event was enjoyed by all and displayed the great camaraderie and friendly rivalry between members of the two clubs. Thanks to all who organized the event, as well as those who participated.

New Year's Eve Party

Approximately 100 people rang in the New Year in style at the Ottawa Curling Club. The party was a rousing success, with all enjoying a sumptuous meal and late night buffet, with excellent entertainment by Quick Sand. The dance floor saw a great amount of action - from the very first tune to the very last tune! The door prizes proved to be a source of entertainment, specially between attending members of the Rolling Stones and the rest of the night's attendees. A good time was had by all!

TV Draw

The draw for the 47" television was conducted at the New Year's Eve party. The lucky winner was Brian Corbett, a member of the OCC. Congratulations Brian!

Our New Ice Maker

An open letter from Joshua Adams (your new Ice Technician) to the members of the Ottawa Curling Club:

I am very excited and pleased to have been chosen as your Ice Technician for the upcoming curling season. Over the summer I will be working closely with the Board of Directors to assess the needs and aspirations of the Club.

The Ottawa Curling Club has felt like home to me since my first experiences learning the art of making ice under the mentorship of Dave Merklinger. I have long dreamed of making the ice for your Club.

I am confident that I have the necessary skills and ability to optimize the facility and equipment of the Ottawa Curling Club and I will be working closely with the Board of Directors and Manager to ensure that I am providing ice conditions for the best possible quality and consistency of play for the members on a daily basis.

I intend to be a presence in the Club so that every member can talk to me about their perception of the ice conditions and I intend to keep those lines of communication open throughout the curling season.

In my years of ice making I have achieved my Ice Technician Level III, and I have participated in ice making at provincial and national levels. With this experience I feel certain that my ice will be a source of pride to the membership when hosting events and guests.

In my experience, what curlers want from their ice is consistency, quality and curl and providing that kind of ice is my commitment to the members of the Ottawa Curling Club.

I wish all of you a safe and enjoyable summer.

I look forward to seeing everyone back for a great season of curling in the fall!
