Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot...

Things heated up at The Ottawa last weekend during the Sizzling Winter Warmup spiel. There was salsa dance instruction to hot Latin beats, lots of "Sex on a Beach", a trivia contest (how long was the world's longest burrito??), a "name that tune" competition, limbo dancing and, oh yeah, some curling thrown in just for fun. For anyone who didn't take part, you missed a great time. Actually, it was worth the entry fee alone just to see Fred Barbieri in a grass skirt! Read more here...

Going, going, gone... to Heather Long!

The big winner this past weekend was Heather Long. She takes home that beautiful 51" Hitachi television... got room for it Heather?! Sorry everyone else, better luck next year!

Curling on TV

If you haven't noticed, there's a whole lot of curling on TV of late. Of note, our club member Annie Lemay is in the final of the Scott Tournament of Hearts with her team from Quebec. And in a couple weeks, there's the Brier! Don't change that channel! Read about Jenn Hanna's experiences at the Scotts in Joe Pavia's Sun article.

Ontario Bantam Champs!

Congratulations to Rachel Homan and her team of Emma Miskew, Alison Kreviazuk and Nicole Johnston winning Bantam Girls Ontario Provincial representing City View Curling Club. Way to go! Full Bantam wrap up in Joe Pavia's Sun article.

Ontario Mens Champs!

Congratulations to Andre Guillemette, Roch Cote, David Morton and David Joseph who were crowned the Ontario Men's Deaf curling champions January 25, 2004. Good luck at the Canadian championships to be held here in Ottawa, April 4-11 at the RA Centre.

Provincial Wrap-Up

Team Harris wins trip to Nokia Brier

For one, it was a nightmare and for the other, a dream. Russell's Bryan Cochrane, the defending Ontario curling champion, had high hopes to repeat at last week's showdown in Owen Sound. But it was not to be, as his foursome finished with a 4-5 record in the round-robin. Read the full story by Joe Pavia, Ottawa Sun.

Team Middaugh wins Scott Ontario Hearts

Despite an excellent 8-1 showing in round-robin play by our own club-mates, Jenn Hanna, Joelle Sabourin, Dawn Askin and Stephanie Hanna, Team Middaugh pulls through to win the Scott Ontario Heart competition. However, Jenn is still going, as Middaugh's fifth player. Read the full story by Joe Pavia of the Sun

North Bay curler Scott Patterson dies in car accident - Our deepest sympathies to the Patterson family

Hanna team is going to provincials

Jenn Hanna and her team of Joelle Sabourin, Dawn Askin and Stephanie Hanna are going to the Ontario provincial championships after winning the A-side of the challenge round last Sunday. Visit the OCA website to follow their progress!

Other winners of late...

Earle Morris, Barb Kelly, Bob Boland and Maureen Morris won the main event of the OVCA Mixed bonspiel. Mark Homan, Rachel Homan, Emile Tougas and Alison Krevazuk won the 2nd event of the same bonspiel.

Best Western Challenge zone winners... Laurie Shields, Ruth Buckland, Katerine Barbieri and Erin Yoshida.

Provincial results are in

Joyce Potter's team of Muriel Potter, Janelle Sadler and Bonnie Morris came oh so close at provincials, falling 7-4 to Anne Dunn team in the final at Senior Women's provincials.

Congratulations to club member Anna Piekarski who played third for Peterborough's Kelly Cochrane, whose team won Ontario's junior women's crown Sunday by beating Ottawa's Lee Merklinger 7-5.

And Mike McLean's team of Chris Stackhouse, Danny Johnstone and Darrell Robertson reached the junior men's semi-finals, but then lost 7-5 in an extra-end to the eventual champion John Epping.

Ottawa-Rideau Challenge

There were Rideaus to the left of them and Rideaus to the right of them...onward into the Volley of Dearth curled the 40 Ottawans!
The December 30th Ottawa-Rideau Challenge saw the Ottawa players come up short on the two outside sheets but hold their own on the three inside sheets. When all the rocks were thrown and all the points counted, the Rideau Club managed to best the brave hearts from Ottawa 62-46.
But all was not lost. Cementing the relations between our band of brothers and sisters at the Rideau, OCC President Gord Perry reminded everyone that this was a spirit of friendly competition that has continued since the two clubs successfully staged the Karcher Juniors last year.
There is always next year and with the friendly feelings abounding... we will get the bastards next year!

A Willie big show at Carp

Willie Jeffries didn't get into trouble in the first end this time. The last stop of the Ottawa Valley Curling Tour saw Jeffries crowned as champion of the Carp Classic on Sunday. Full Story

We offer our congratulations to our club members that qualified this year. Deb Karbashewski and her team of Tara Holland, Lisa Paddle and Andrea Leganchuk came within one point of advancing to the semi-finals, falling 8-7 to Nicholls. Jean-Michel Menard and his team of François Roberge, Eric Sylvain and Maxim Elmaleh lost 9-5 to Stoughton in the quarter-finals as well. More...

The CCA and the World Curling Federation have worked together to align the rules of curling competitions. A new rule book is available and there is a summary of the changes available at: the CCA's National Training Center web site. The OCC conducts our leagues under the CCA rules, so this means four rock rule is in effect for this curling season at the Ottawa!

Rock Report

In the summer of 2001 the OCC board took on the mission of improving the quality of the curling stones at the OCC. The decision was made to insert them and the stones were sent to CANCURL. The curling season following, it was recognized that the stones suffered inconsistencies and they were sent back to CANCURL under warranty to be reconditioned. The OCC was assured the necessary corrections could and would be made to improve the stones. After this past season of use, the OCC realized that the stones were still not adhering to the desired specifications.
Also during this past curling season, CANCURL discontinued its practices in curling and sold its assets. Canada Curling Stone purchased the rock assets and assumed warranty for CANCURL rocks and inserts. After consultation with the OCC Ice Technician, Brent Kirkham, and the owner of Canada Curling Stone, Fred Veale, the management of the OCC decided to pursue reconditioning of the stones once again.

The stones have returned to the OCC after reconditioning with Mr. Veale and the workmanship appears to be top quality. Prints provided demonstrate a consistent running surface of 5.2 mm throughout all stones. Weights and measures have been provided to allow proper pairing of stones. The gliding surface, which previously showed deep scarring which affected speed and consistency, has been adjusted.

The playability that the OCC is looking for should now be attained. There will be a run-in period and the OCC will keep Mr. Veale informed of the progress of the stones. The OCC is confident that the stones have finally reached a point where curlers will be pleased with the performance as the year progresses.

Ice Update

Thanks to the slightly warmer temperatures, it has been taking a little longer for each layer of ice to freeze. Also, with the high levels of moisture in the arena, the rocks were held back from being brought in since if they absorbed water and then froze it would increase the chances of cracking. The rocks have now been brought into the arena, but are not quite cold enough to be put down on the ice. However, it is expected that they will be cold enough Tuesday for lunchtime practice. Check back here for more updates.
