It is with regret that we inform you of the passing of a member of the Ottawa Curling Club. Bob Boyle passed away on Tuesday, July 17. He was an avid golfer and curler. His obituary will be in the Ottawa papers on Friday, July 20. The wake will be at Hulse Playfair and McGarry on Sunday, July 22 from 2 to 4 pm. A service will be held in the chapel at 4 pm.

The City of Ottawa Bonspiel is looking for a volunteer from the Ottawa Curling Club. If you have previously enjoyed the event, or are just interested in helping out, please contact Emile, our club manager for more information.
The club will be open during the summer within the following hours:

The Ottawa Curling Club was represented by Layne Noble's foursome in Kingston during the JVC Mixed Provincial finals. Layne's team started slowly, but won 3 critical games to qualify for a tiebreaker. After taking the short route to the provincial, the team took the long route to the final. After difficult games in the tiebreaker and the semi-finals, they succumb to Wayne Tuck's team, from the Ilderton Curling Club, in the final. Layne's team was

This year's golf tournament is scheduled for Friday June 1, 2001. Spots are going extremely fast, so if plan to participate sign up soon. The sign up sheet is currently located in the viewing lounge behind sheet four.
The play downs to qualify for open spots in the Wednesday Night Cash League will be held immediately following the Perry spiel. The qualifier games will start Monday May 7 and conclude Wednesday May 9, 2001.
On Sunday April 8, four teams, comprised of OCC volunteers and a few board members, travelled to the Buckingham Curling Club to compete for the Currier Cup. The OCC got ahead early, scoring 7 in the first end on sheet two. The group managed to hang to their early lead and win by 11, successfully defending their title. Next year's Currier Cup will be hosted by the Ottawa Curling Club during the final month of the 150th anniversary season.
At the JVC Mixed Regionals, held at the Hylands C.C., Layne Noble's foursome won the 'A' event are headed to the Mixed Provincials. Congratulations to
The JVC Mixed Zone 1, at Alexandria, was won by Layne Noble's team. The 'B' side was claimed by the Korim/Diguer tandem.
The Roy Blair Bonspiel finished Friday night, with the Mens 2 and Mixed division playing their final games. Mens 1 finished their games on Thursday night with Doug Johnston's team knocking of Emile Tougas team to claim top spot. Mens 2 was decided with Jeff McKnight's squad topping the Clark team. The Mixed final featured bantam Jennifer Norris, who came up a little short against the Aprile rink.

The Ottawa Curling Club was well represented this past weekend in the 2001 City of Ottawa Bonspiel. Gerry Anton's and Glenn Bunting's rinks won events in the Open section, while Ken Ross' team won in the Senator's division. Layne Noble's team was runner-up in the Grand Aggregate, losing a close one to Brian Fleischhaker's Jr. rink from the Granite C.C.
The Ottawa Curling Club's Little Rocks and Junior program are on the look out for curling equipment. If you're planning to replace your broom or shoes, consider donating them to the up and coming curlers in our Little Rocks/Junior program.

The Ontario Colleges Atheletic Association held its provincial curling championships in Peterborough from March 8-11. Algonquin went 4-1 through the round robin, finishing first, earning a spot in the finals. They defeated Confederation College 7-5 to win the title. Bryan Cochrane's rink had an excellent week in Woodstock at the Nokia Cup finals. Wins Thursday night versus Wayne Middaugh and Friday against John Morris would have handed the team first overall. Rod Matheson remains hot, winning the Ontario Tim Horton's Masters competition. Rod played third for Bill Dickie of Cornwall. The team went 6-1, edging out Jim Sharples team who finished second at 5-2. Rod will be off to beautiful Winnipeg for the Canadian Masters finals held at the end of March 2001.
Congratulations to OCC member Joelle Sabourin. Joelle, and the Quebec Provincial Mixed Team won the Canadian Mixed Championship with a tenth end steal versus Nova Scotia's Mark Dacey. Joelle was also named to the 2nd all-star team as lead.
The club would also like to acknowledge the accomplishments of our teams that have made it to the provincial level. Congrats to Joyce Potter's Sr. Ladies team, Chris Ciasnocha's Jr. Mens team, and Jenn Hanna's Jr. Ladies. Club members Dwayne Lowe-Sr. Mens, Lovell Lord-Sr. Mens and Marion Dupont also played at provincials this season.

The main event was won by Wayne Middaugh's team from Victoria Harbour, Ontario consisting of Graeme McCarrel, Ian Tetley and Scott Bailey. They took away $15,000 by defeating Kerry Burtnyk's team from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Playing with Kerry were Jeff Ryan, Rob Meakin and Keith Fenton. They won $9,000.
The women's event was won by Sherry Fraser's team from Richmond BC. made up of Sherry, Diane McLean, Corie Beveridge and Christine Jurgenson. They won $9,000. The runner-up was team Bradley from Charlottetown PEI. The team consisted of Shelly Bradley, Janice MacCallum, Leslie Allen and Tricia MacGregor. They took away $6,000.
The senior's event was won by Dave Van Dine's foursome from the Rideau Curling Club in Ottawa. Playing with Dave were Eldon Coombe, Lovel Lord and Joe Potter. They won $6,800. They defeated Bob Turcotte from Toronto. Bob's team was made up of Roy Weigand, Bob Lichti and Steve McDermot. Their winnings were $3,700.

The Board has approved the lease of Jet Ice tanks to assist Ian, the Ice Guru.
One of our highly successful junior teams has won the London Junior Cashspiel for the second time. The Jenn Hanna rink went undefeated through the spiel on the weekend of October 28/29 to take home the top prize of $1000.00. Playing with Jenn were Dawn Askin at 3rd, Steph Hanna at 2nd and Melanie Robillard at Lead.
It has been pointed out by one of our readers that this is actually Jenn's third straight year winning this spiel. The first time was with the team of: Denna Schell, Julie Colquhoun and Leesa Broder.

Plans are underway for the celebration of the OCC's 150th Anniversary during the 2001-2002 season. All members who are interested in working on the committee which will oversee the many activities planned for that year are asked to contact Barbara Brown or the club manager.
Bryan Cochrane defeated Reg Plaster in the Final of this bonspiel, played on Thanksgiving weekend. Playing with Bryan were John Steski, Ian MacAuley and Doug Johnston. Reg had Gord Kritsch, Paul Englebrecht and Dave Johannsen with him.
Randy Garland's team of Bob Boyle, John Chiarelli and Bruce Lonsbery scored an 8 ender at the Navy Senior Spiel.
The selection committee has awarded the Ice contact for the 2000-2001 season to Ian MacAulay. Ian is not a stranger to the OCC, and now we look forward to working with him in his new role as our Ice Technician.
