An almost-full contingent of OCC members and friends had their faith in the old phrase "it never rains on the golf course" upheld on June 9th, as the rains held off and the golf took place. A shotgun tournament at Hylands, preceeded by lunch and followed by dinner and prizes at the OCC, saw 140 players participate.
Karen Allen and friends presented the sparkling new Bonnie Matheson Memorial trophy to the winning net team of Jim Stewart, John Galligan, Brad Shinn and Bill Coleman.
Low gross honours for a 63 went to Lovel Lord, Bill Fletcher, Kirk Smyth and Dave Korim, with runners-up at 64 gross to Brian Dunlop, Jean-Marc Isabelle, Jim Pamplin and Gilles Tessier.

Many thanks to numerous sponsors (especially John Steski of Criterion) for their generous prizes, to Rae Brown for the organizing work, and to Paul Turenne and crew for their help barbequing the steaks. A good time was had by all!
Six teams participated in playdowns held May 1st and 2nd to determine the order of priority for admission of new teams (if any) to the Cash League next year. The winning team is a Junior team, skipped by Christopher Ciasnocha who has previously played out of the Navy and Granite club.
Jack Bylsma's team was the runner-up. The teams in order of finish were skipped by Allan Derby, Cheryl McBain, Jesse Ruppell (Granite) and Dan Ray.
We have a new club champion with the defeat of the Bryan Cochrane foursome of Bill Gamble, Ian MacAuley, and Mike Pastuch by the Earle Morris team. This win by Earle and his team of Gord Schade, John Colquhoun, and Bob Boland brings Bryan's domination of the club championship to an end after three years.
Congratulations to Earle's team, and to all those who made it to the championship playdowns.

This meeting also presented the opportunity for the introduction of our new manager, Emile Tougas, who will be replacing Stephan Amyot in May.
Emile brings significant training and experience in facilties management as well as a long involvement in curling. We welcome him to the OCC and to Ottawa and we look forward to working with him in the years to come.
The Danny Lamoureux Shield is awarded to members who stand out as volunteers at the club and who make a large contribution to the success of the club. The award was given out at the Spring meeting by Danny, to Bob Carradus and Jack Casserly for their contributions in the 1999 and 2000 seasons. To Bob and Jack congratulations and thanks.
Teams representing the Ottawa Curling Club had a strong hold on all final play at the Senior Mixed Zone playdowns in Metcalfe this weekend.
In the A final, Reg Plaster, with Donna Lamoureux, Randy Garland and Dianne Sullivan, defeated Rod Matheson's team. In B semi-final play, Murray Russell, with Sandra Chisholm, Gerry Chartrand and Wendy Russell, topped Ken Ross, with Collette Deschamps, Dave Johannsen and Jane Askin. That put the Russell team against the Matheson team in the B final. Rod Matheson, with Margaret McLaughlin, Paul Engelbrecht and Darlene Engelbrecht, joins the Plaster team in a trip to the Regionals next weekend in Trenton.
Congratulations to all, and good luck.
Congratulations to the OCC team of Wally Morris, Rod Matheson, Paul Engelbrecht and Gord Pringle for their convincing win of the Senior's Grand Aggregate in play at the Rideau Sunday evening. They defeated Granite's Claude Lamy 8-3. Other OCC event winners included Roger Mitchell, Bob Preston, Ralph Joncas and Ken Ross. Many OCC members were among over 1,100 curlers who participated in the five-day annual event at clubs throughout the area.
The spring general meeting will be held on March 28th (just before the Blair draft). This meeting will allow your board of directors to fill you in on the state of the business and club operations.
Ottawa retained the Currier Cup on Saturday, March 11th, with a 16 to 10 victory over Buckingham in a two-game combined-score competition. Sixteen players from each Club took part, and enjoyed the curling and the comaraderie. This event originated in 1866. Play was revived last year, after a seven-year hiatus, with representatives from both clubs being Board members and volunteers. Buckingham will host the event in 2001.
The OCC's Ken Ross rink finish the Masters Provincial playdowns as runnerup behind Jim Sharples. The Ross rink finished the week with a 5-2 record to Sharples' 6-1. Congratulations to Ken and his team.
You can directly access the results on the OCA website.

In Teranet Junior Men's play, Jason Young, skipping a team out of Burlington, is representing Ontario at the Nationals for the second straight year. Last year Jason played second on the John Morris team that went on to win both the Nationals and Worlds.

The OCC had three teams in competition this weekend at the Holiday Inn Challenge Zone Playdowns at the RCMP club. Teams skipped by Eric Johannsen, Dave Johannsen and Steve Mitchell participated but failed to advance. Eventual winners were Kevin Holmes of RCMP and Bill Sobering from Glengarry. If you would like to play next year, you may wish to consider Eric's name strongly at the Blair draft in April, he seems to be a perennial at this event.
Congratulations to Muriel Potter who was vicing this weekend for Diane Harris' City View rink which won the Senior Ladies Provincial Playdown. Muriel will now go on to the Nationals in Portage la Prairie January 22 - 30.
Donna Lamoureux's squad did the Ottawa proud by rebounding from two single point defeats to rattle off three successive wins to return to contention before succumbing to eventual finalist Jill Greenwood.
Gerry Chartrand's rink found themselves in a three way tie for first after an extremely impressive round-robin, unfortunately in the semi-finals they fell victim to eventual winner Bob Turcotte whom they had already beaten once earlier in the week.

The Ottawa has hosted the annual challenge with the Rideau CC, and being the gracious hosts that we are, we let them win (by a rather large margin of 13 points). A good time was had by all of the participants and we look forward to bringing the cup back from the Rideau next year.
Ken Ross with the team of Rae Brown, Gord Perry Jr. and Cec Morriss lost to Bill Dickie of Cornwall in the "A" final, but came back to defeat clubmate Rod Matheson in the "B" final, and so move on to Regional play in Kingston on December 18th and 19th.

Many thanks to the spiel organisers (sponsors), Tim Brown and John Steski.
The Cheryl McBain team carried the OCC colours to the Mike Harris Championship of Champions spiel. They made it to the quarter finals of the consolation round. Apparently the golf was better, they won four rounds.
A great time was had by all, to quote one team member "Mike throws an excellent bonspiel".
The Rubber Leg spiel was held on Oct 1st and 2nd with 28 participants. While this was a smaller group than hoped everyone had a good time, good food and everyone went home with a bottle of wine from the prize table.
